Collegedale Academy Mobilizes to Aid Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts in North Carolina
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, which has caused catastrophic damage across the southeastern United States, Collegedale Academy is taking decisive action to support those affected in the broader Asheville, North Carolina area. Helene brought high winds and torrential rains, resulting in severe flooding, widespread power outages, and significant property damage.
In response to the devastating impact of the storm, Collegedale Academy will be sending critical resources such as water and gasoline to the Asheville area, where many families are struggling in the aftermath. This relief effort was inspired by the Academy’s close proximity to the affected area and the personal connections many of its students and staff have with those impacted by the storm.
On Monday, September 30, 2024, several CA students assisted in loading a trailer with the first round of donated supplies, including water and non-perishables. The supplies will be transported early the following morning by CA Bible teacher Tyler Hodges, who is originally from the Asheville, NC area. “Our students and staff feel a deep connection to the community there. Many of us have family there and in the surrounding area. We knew we had to do something to help.” said Hodges.
In addition to the immediate relief supplies, Collegedale Academy is working to coordinate a student mission trip to assist with cleanup efforts. The trip is tentatively scheduled for mid to late October with approximately 12-15 CA students and several adult volunteers. “We are grateful for the opportunity for our students to help those in need and to make an impact. This experience will not only provide essential aid butalso foster a sense of unity and service among our students,” shared CA’s mission trip director Michael Peel.
Throughout the upcoming week, Collegedale Academy will be collecting donations from students and their families. Items such as water, diapers, toiletry supplies, and monetary contributions are being accepted to support the ongoing relief efforts. “The devastation brought by Hurricane Helene has touched us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have suffered, and it is our heartfelt desire to bring some relief to those in need.” stated CA Principal Brent Baldwin.
