WELCOME TO COLLEGEDALE ACADEMY & FRESHMAN ENGLISH!!

It’s exciting to have you here this year. I have a lot of awesome (and challenging) activities lined up for you. I would like to encourage you to set your standards high and make a determined effort to achieve them. Remember to keep Jesus #1 in your classes, your work, and your social life, and He WILL bless! Below are most of the class survival essentials:

Class rules

• We will bring our materials to class. (Textbook/trade book, Vocab Wksp workbook, student handbook, loose-leaf lined paper, binder, pencils)
• We will come prepared to class. (HOMEWORK, presentations, etc.)
• We will respect each other’s ideas and opinions. Snide remarks and rude gestures are not allowed. Use appropriate comments to express your difference of opinion, such as, “I disagree with Joe because…”
• We will support/lift up/congratulate our fellow classmates. (Won’t that feel good when it’s your turn to be congratulated for a good job!)
• We will neither plagiarize nor cheat —whether from a classmate, printed material, or the internet. (See p. 51 of the handbook)—GENERAL RULE : If you copy the wording or even the idea in any way, write down where you got it from! If you are not sure, ask before handing in!

Class procedures

1. Homework will be passed in at the beginning of class.
2. My late policy: 1 class period =20%; later = not accepted.
3. ABSENCES You are responsible for:
1. giving Mrs. Nafie your written excuse within a week.
2. informing yourself of missed work (see my website, or call me or a classmate).
3. making up all the work (one class period per day missed)
4. If tardy/absence is unexcused, you may not make up missed work.
5. All music for any project done in class must be pre-approved. If not, you risk receiving an F no matter how much time you put into the other aspects of the project.
6. Only one person may leave on a hall pass at a time.
   7. All written work, whether typed or handwritten must be: neat, double-spaced (DS), and include in the top right-hand corner :

8. All essay-type assignments must be typed and double-spaced.

9. If you feel you were graded incorrectly or unfairly, please do not hesitate to come and see me about it. You may be right!

Grading Scale (new grading system is on p. 22 of your handbook)

Each semester grade will be based on the following:
Homework 45%
Tests & projects 40%
In-class participation 10%
Attendance 10%
