HOW-TO SPEECH
Each student will prepare a speech, showing the class how to do something (bake cookies, change the oil in a car, make an origami penguin…)
As you prepare, make sure your SPEECH:
- is a step-by-step how-to process
- avoids the obvious like "How to brush your teeth"
- has a serious tone (though it can be witty!)
- is about 5-10 min. long (NOT including Q & A)
- has at least one VISUAL AID
- is MEMORIZED
Don't forget to:
- make EYE CONTACT with your audience
- talk loudly and clearly
- not begin until you are up and prepared; stop talking before you get "off stage" You will be graded from the moment you walk up to when you leave the "stage."
- HAVE ALL YOUR MATERIAL PRE-PREPARED (Remember, if you are showing us how to bake a cake, you cannot do it in from beginning to end in our presence--have different stages of the process pre-prepared for us to view)
- be knowledgeable about your subject for Q & A
- If possible: Have everyone do it with you (do not pick a difficult task—or you will lose everyone in the process); if you make something edible, have some samples (cut and prepared in baggies, or small cups, etc.)
You may:
Do (all or part of) your speech on video. If you choose this option:- It is considered a visual aid.
- You must still introduce your topic (up front) to the class.
- You are responsible for equipment set-up prior to your introduction.
- Try your multi-media equipment in my classroom the day before; I will not excuse a speech due to your video camera or other equipment not working.
